There are two different types of printers available on the market. One is inkjet printer and the other is photo or picture printer. Both are quite different from each other in terms of usage and design. As the name suggests a photo printer is made to print pictures and an Inkjet printer is designed to print text documents.
What many wonder is if you can get color text from an inkjet printer why can’t you get pictures from that too? Like I said the difference is in the design. There are many technological differences in both due to which an inkjet printer can’t print pictures and vice versa.
With the advancement in technology, inkjet picture printers are also available. This does both the jobs for you. However the quality of photos still doesn’t match with the picture printers. The main reason is that the all in one printer which does everything, needs to have everything like text, graphics and even high resolution for printing good text and photos. The photo printer on the other hand has dye sublimation technology. They don’t spray tiny jets; rather they apply a color film.
There are benefits and drawbacks in both inkjet and picture printers. First let’s look at picture printers. A picture printer is very quick in printing pictures compared to inkjet. They require no maintenance where as the inkjet printer does need regular maintenance like cleaning and even replacement. It does clog too.
The prints are very smooth in picture printers and the dots are not visible at all even if magnified. Most inkjet printers shows the dot pattern on the print outs. They print very good details of shadows in dark areas too; which may appear blotchy in inkjet prints.
Due to die- sublimation technology there is a clear top coat on the prints which protects the pictures from being damaged from water and finger prints. There is no protection from water in inkjet. If the water spills on the print, it is ruined.
Some of the negatives of a photo printer should be noted too. A picture printer produces very good quality glossy photos but not matte photos. Many printers do not even have such options. If you look at an inkjet printer they have all three options: glossy, matte and luster.
In picture printers you can’t use any paper size; you are allowed to use only the specified one, which is not the case with inkjet. Even if you want to print a very small photo, a picture printer still uses the whole film. If dust gets into it then they show vertical scratches on the pictures. A major difference is the price. The picture printer costs $$ compared to inkjet printer. A difference which most buyers consider!
